SIBELIUS STUDENT COMPOSER COMPETITION

Sibelius’s second annual student composer competition – for anyone aged 10-18 years – is now open for entries with a closing date of 31st October. Entries are invited in three categories – jazz, film and classical/contemporary – and judges include Lord Puttnam, Howard Goodall and Oscar winning composer Dario Marianelli (Atonement) alongside Karl Jenkins, Leonard Slatkin and jazz musicians Billy Cobham and Django Bates. Prizes include masterclasses with members of the judging panel, plus winners’ compositions performed by a live ensemble. Software and cash prizes will also be awarded.

LUXEMBOURG SINFONIETTA

International Composition Prize for the year 2008

The Luxembourg Sinifonietta's annual composer prize competition is focusing this year on a Chinese mouth organ known as the Sheng which can play up to 6 notes at once and is completely chromatic. You will need to go to their web site for details of the instruments in the ensemble. The LS are well known for their long-standing commitment to contemporary art music and, as entries are always kept anonymous until after the winners are chosen, there is nothing stopping new composers taking part on a level playing field.

The closing date for 2008 entries is 1st July 2008 but this prize is usually offered annually so look out for details of next year's competition later in the year.
